• Notes

  Several events occurred in 1924 that are worth noting. A cartoon strip `Little Orphan Annie` first appeared in newspapers that year, Asa Gunn and Lois Larsen were married, Presidents George Bush and Jimmy Carter were born and so was Joseph Norman Fisher. The birth place of all four Fisher children was Ashland, Ohio. My oldest brother, Robert Joseph was born in 1915, Donald Jefferson born in 1917, and Bonita Marie born in 1921. When I was a little boy, I wanted to grow up to be a fireman, policeman, actor, musician, and newspaper man, more or less in that order. Before I was thirteen years old my family lived in eight houses in four different states. I was born in the house at 128 East Liberty in Ashland, Ohio, then moved to 47 W. Mildred Avenue, Akron, Ohio, and 2200 (can`t remember the exact address) Argonne Drive, Kirkwood, Missouri, 9 Hyde Place, Toledo, Ohio, 110 W. Alvord Street, Springfield, Massachusetts, 133 Westford Avenue in Springfield, and finally to Illinois. We lived in an apartment in Oak Park at 428 S. Maple Avenue and after I returned from the army we moved to 421 Clinton Avenue in Oak Park. Most of us have one or more embarrassing memories during our lifetime. Mine occurred when we moved from Massachusetts to Oak Park. I was in the seventh grade and on the first day at Emerson School I was led to the new class room. Every eye was on the new kid. When I looked at them I wanted to run from the room as I made a devastating discovery. I was the only boy wearing knickers in a room full of long pants.I never wore knickers again. I was also very lucky because one day in Toledo, Ohio I fell from the top of a bill board when I was six years old. I was at the top and the boys down below were throwing mud balls that I was supposed to catch. I reached out too far and tumbled to the ground and luckily fell on my feet in a crouched position. Fortunately my only injury was a pain in the stomach that lasted for several days. I was cured, however of one thing. I never again climbed to the top of a billboard. I liked acting and my debut was in the title role of The Big Bad Wolf when I was in the first grade in Toledo, Ohio. I appeared in various plays in high school, played the trumpet in the high school band as well as in several U.S. Army bands while in Europe during World War II. While attending high school I worked in the Jewel Food Store produce department, ushered at the Lamar Theater in Oak Park, and was a stock boy at Wieboldts and Marshall Field department stores. While in college, I drove a Village taxi cab and after college I drove the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. I was hired by Sears in 1953 and worked there for 32 years before retirement in 1985. On December 31, 1946 Nadine Gunn and I went out together on our first date. We went to a movie in downtown Chicago and saw, `The Best Years of Our Lives,` an appropriate title for our life that was to follow. We were married on January 22, 1949 when I was on a semester break from college.
