  By Nadine Gunn Fisher Asa Gunn was a gentle man whose character personified the word "Christian" although most of his life he was not a church member and when he was over 60 years old he joined Christ Methodist Church in Elmhurst, Illinois. His daughter, Nadine Gunn Fisher often said: "If he doesn't get into heaven just because he didn't belong to a church, then I'm not going either." When Ace came in from the garage after work he always whistled "something", a habit probably acquired because he was alone so much in his work. Asa William Gunn was a caterer. He prepared sandwiches, soups, and desserts in his store front shop in the building he owned at 6204 Roosevelt Road in Oak Park, then drove his panel truck to several factories where he served lunch to the day shift and later sandwiches and snacks for the night shift. Grandpa Gunn did all the cooking and had one helper. Because of his self sufficiency, he provided well for his family, his wife Lois and two children, Nadine and Bill. He liked to cook even when he wasn't working and often prepared Sunday dinner. Nadine remembers "taking care" of him in the summer when her mother was at the cottage on Channel Lake in Antioch, Illinois. "One time I cooked a chicken for him but I didn't get it in the oven soon enough and when my Dad came home, it wasn't done so he took this gorgeous chicken and chopped it into small pieces so it would cook faster. He was right of course, but I was a little let down because I wanted to do the whole thing myself." Asa Gunn loved his grandchildren. He and Grandma Gunn often took care of the kids on week ends, usually at their house on 831 Taylor Avenue in Oak Park, Illinois. Grandpa made pop corn and Grandma made fudge. All the Fisher kids have fond memories of these fun times, except Katie because Grandpa Gunn died when she was only 18 months old. He was tolerant especially concerning his children even when he didn't understand some of the things they did. For instance when his son Bill attended the Institute of Design, he painted abstract pictures as part of his study. His father looked at the strange shapes and colors, and shook his head as he wondered about the value of this bewildering art form but supported his son's efforts through graduation because he loved Bill and had confidence in him. Asa William Gunn suffered a fatal heart attack in his kitchen on Taylor Avenue and died at the age of 68 on February 12, 1963. Even the mail man came to the funeral of this man who was loved and respected by all who knew him.
