Edward was born in Joliet, Illinois and Sarah was born in Canada. They lived at one period of their lives in Plato Center, Illinois where they were farmers.

Edward and Sarah had eight children including James Garfield Nelson, Jim (Donald) Nelson's father. Grandpa Edward Nelson met an untimely death when he was killed accidentally by a train as he was driving his horse drawn wagon over a railroad crossing. Sarah died of diabetes some years later in Downers Grove, Illinois.
