Otto was born in Germany and came to the United states when he was a young man . He worked for Raymond Lead Works until he retired.

Otto married Caroline Gerling when she lived in Bloomington, Illinois. She was born in Germany on August 13, 1865 and she died in 1914 when their only son, Edwin Paul Sr. was 13 years old.

In 1923 Otto bought a house on North Springfield Avenue in Chicago . He lived there with his two sisters, Tracey Pelz and Augusta Pelz Topel.

Later, their son Edwin and his wife Estelle moved into a one room apartment on the scond floor. It had a kitchen sink and a one-burner stove. Of course they had some use of the rest of the house and the fenced-in back yard where Edwin Jr.played.

Edwin Jr. vividly recalls those days: "I was in my warm bed in the middle of winter and I could hear Grandpa Otto get up before dawn, shake the coal furnace and carry out the ashes to the alley. I remember thinking to myself, I hope I never have to do that job."

Otto was a humble, kind, and generous man who never complained about anything.

Ed Pelz remembers his grandfather: "When I was in fifth grade and having trouble with asthma, he would walk to school with me and carry my books. It was about a seven block walk and when the weather was cold, we would stop and rest in the foyers of apartment buildings. I will never forget Grandpa Otto."

Otto A. Pelz was 80 years old when he died on April 5, 1947.
