Adventures Of An Army Blowhard
Dad's memoirs of his time in the Army written in 1998 (All his military documents are at the end):
"When I saw his picture in July 1943, I finally realized the guy in the tall hat was pointing at me. Uncle Sam then sent me a nice letter with a salutation that said "Greetings" and the United States Army drafted me. I assumed there was a mistake. Why would the Army want a skinny, adolescent like me, weighing less than 125 pounds to become one of America's fighting men? It just did not add up.
But there was no mistake. On July 23, 1943, one month after graduation from high school, I was a Private in the U.S. Army. Six months later, on January 16, 1944, I boarded a troop ship, bound for the British Isles and an unknown future. Talk about culture shock! Within five months I weathered the drudgery of basic training, was declared fit for combat duty, and was on board an ocean liner headed for the European Theater of Operations..."
