Asa Gunn Stock Certificates
I found these stock certificates dating back to 1907 and 1908 in Mom's files and wondered if I found a lost gold mine!
After researching the certificates it appears Grampa Gunn invested $800 in the Dean Rapid Telegraph Company - $200 on June 3, 1907 and $600 on June 24, 1908. Telegraph stock was the "dot com" of the era and there was tremendous fraud going on (check http://earlyradiohistory.us/1907fool.htm for a detailed account).
The Dean Rapid Telegraph Company was incorporated on May 4, 1909 and dissolved on December 2, 1913 in Missouri. Robert L. Dean appears to have been a legitimate businessman:
"The system of automatic telegraphy invented by Robert L Dean of Kansas City Mo was in operation during the year (1909) covered by this report over a three hundred and twenty mile circuit between Kansas City and St Louis Mo The wire employed in this system is also used for telephone purposes Specially constructed typewritersI are used for both sending and receiving The typewriter at the sending end is used to prepare the telegram for transmission The messages are prepared at the rate of about fifty Words a minute after which the transmitter sends them over the line at a high rate of speed At the receiving end the words of the message are printed in Gothic letters in page form in a manner similar to the old Bonelli chemical telegraph reproduction."
